Declaration by the Water Polo Federations present at the Meeting held in Budapest on the 26 May on the occasion of the LEN Final 6.

All Nations present at the Meeting held in Budapest on the 26 May on the occasion of the LEN Final 6 unanimously agree that the Proposed Changes to the Water Polo Rules as presented by the FINA Bureau shall not be supported at the Technical Water Polo Congress to be held on the 13 July 2017 at 14.00 during the World Championships in Budapest 2017. The members present for the meeting strongly believe that such changes to the rules do not in any way improve the quality of the sport and can seriously negatively affect the spirit of the game from both technical and promotional aspects thus limiting the development of the sport from a worldwide perspective.

FINA will not debate or vote on the proposal of waterpolo rules’ reform during the Technical Congress in Budapest on July 13rd: they will postpone any decision to another future congress, probably in October. The news leaks directly from FINA: on next July 11th, the executive committee in Budapest will propose to defer the debate about the waterpolo rules and then that proposal will have to be approved by the FINA Bureau on the next day, July 12th.

That move is motivated because FINA fear that the proposal about waterpolo reform can be rejected at the Technical Congress, due to the large opposition of waterpolo community and of the European Federations led by LEN.

Also the Technical Congress comes a few days before the FINA president election, scheduled for July 22nd: LEN president Paolo Barelli is running against the current president Julio Maglione.

Therefore the reform of waterpolo rules has not yet been retired: FINA will start again the discussion after their president elections.
